TEAM 4HIVHope Crew Members

Sandra Smith - Crew Member

Picture
After a rewarding Human Resources career, Sandra moved from Louisiana to Santa Fe, NM. "Santa‑Fe provides a fabulous base from which my husband and I live out our adventures." Sandra's husband Mike is a seasoned endurance athlete who participates in many 100 mile trail runs each year. Sandra's "crew chief" experience comes from supporting Mike and others in endurance events. Her resourcefulness in crewing keeps her in demand. She particularly enjoys events held in remote locations. Sandra enjoys hiking, fishing, photography and travelling.

"I grew up an air force brat and learned at an early age that great diversity existed in the air force community. My foundation as an adult advocate for diversity and acceptance grew from the experiences I had as a child. The people I've encountered who are HIV positive have a tremendous stigma attached to them. Team4HIVHope shatters myths regarding the physical disabilities often associated with HIV positive athletes. I am proud to work with athletes who are so dedicated to their physical goals while bringing awareness to HIV issues."

Sandra will join the crew in Durango, taking over from Jim Williams who after a short stint at his office will see Steven finish in Annapolis.

Matt Colleran -  Crew Chief

Picture
Every team needs a "cool hand Luke" and Matt Colleran is that guy for Team 4HIVHope. Matt's versatile skills meant he worked in every crew role during 2011 and 2012. He excelled at navigation; however his ability to get things done, handle details and stay cool while dealing with the occasional swirling chaos was instrumental in our team's great performances in 2011. Matt lives in Los Angeles where he works in the music industry.

Peter Chapman - Team Doctor

Picture
Peter Chapman joins us from the UK, having been team doctor for the 4 man team "Crank Addicts" in RAAM 2011, and Team4HIVHope in 2012. His medical experience in a hospital Emergency Department together with his cycling and RAAM experience means he can manage all sorts of issues that might spring up during RAAM!

Doug Watkins - RV Driver

Picture
Doug is an American born in Toledo, Ohio and currently living in Vancouver British Columbia Canada. He was diagnosed with HIV in August 1996. However for the last 15 years worrying about it is the last thing on his mind. “I will be hit by the proverbial bus before HIV gets me", he says. He knows that many people have not been as lucky as he, with perfect health and access to the best medicines and health care in the world. In the last 90's and early 00's he rode in 3 AIDS rides in Florida. They were 3 day events going from Orlando to Ft. Lauderdale. Another ride was from Montreal to Portland (Maine!).

He also has crewing experience on a ride from Amsterdam to Paris. However, nothing can compare with crewing for last year's Team 4 HIVHope. "It was one of the most difficult, exhausting things I have ever done, and I can't wait to do it again!" With the lessons learned from last year, Doug is looking forward to being a part of the team that helps Steven reaching his dream of finishing solo RAAM.

Joseph Iley - RV Driver

Picture
Joining us from Austin, TX is Joseph Iley. Joseph is a taxi driver/owner with a diverse mechanical background, including aircraft mechanics. In his spare time, Joseph rides his recumbent trike in ALC and other races. He is HIV+ and a member of PosPeds. During the 2011 and 2012 RAAM, Joseph saved the day for the team more than once with his ability to fix things and do whatever was necessary to keep the wheels rolling.

In Joe's own words, "I joined Team 4 HIVHope back in 2011 because it was a chance to be part of history. When I learned for certain that Steven would return for his own solo attempt at RAAM, I made certain to let Jim, Steven and Sandra know that I wanted to return just because I had such a great time last year. I'm just saddened that my fellow Aussie friend Martin Berveling (brother of racer Steven Berveling) would not be returning. He and I were a comedy show on wheels."

Rich Chapman - Bike Mechanic

Picture
Richard Chapman also joins us from the UK having previously competed against Team 4HIVhope as a racer for the 4 man team "Crank Addicts" in RAAM 2011, and being part of our crew in 2012. The two teams had a great camaraderie / keen rivalry including swapping positions many times and when the Crank Addicts managed to crash their RV in Batesville, IN, Team 4HIVhope immediately offered to help in whatever way they could. Well the Crank Addicts finished the race and now Richard is back to crew for Steven who epitomised the spirit of RAAM. A commercial pilot by trade, but also brings skills to the party as a bike mechanic, Richard hopes his experience as a racer will help the crew understand what it’s like on the other side of the fence and will be able to finally say whether it is tougher crewing or racing !

Lorraine Williams - Navigator

Picture
Lorraine Williams learned a lot about endurance racing in 2011 and 2012. As the big sister of racer Jim Williams, her Mom's instructions to her were "take care of your brother and don't let Jim get hurt." She did a lot more than that. Lorraine, who is employed as a government accountant, put her attention to detail to work in figuring out the route books and navigation for the race in 2011 and 2012. Lorraine was an expert navigator and helped the team keep things moving in the right direction--and when the RV backed into a ditch she managed to find a tow truck in less than 10 minutes! Lorraine lives in Alexandria, VA with her pit-mix puppy Elvis.

Ali Kerr - Crew Member

Picture
Ali and Steven worked together in Adelaide, South Australia a long time ago. They’ve remained friends ever since.  Ali, who currently manages a law firm in Perth Western Australia and comes to RAAM with a huge range of “can-do” organisational experience.  She will ensure that everybody is in the right place, doing the right thing, at the right time!

John Gillingham - RN

Picture
John has crewed for a number of Aids Life Cycle Rides from San Francisco to Los Angeles.  His usual abode is the psych ward.  These two join well together for RAAM solo!

Karen Joran - Crew Member

Picture
Like Richard and Peter, Karen joins us from the UK.  She is a sports Physiotherapist, having recently worked at the 2012 London Olympics and now with the international tennis federation.

Liz Murphy - PR and Media

Picture
Liz, from Adelaide South Australia specialises in communication and project management.  With the can-do attitude of so many Australians, Liz will make a valuable contribution to the team.
